The main cause of COPD is long-term cigarette smoking. Other causes include air pollution, chemical fumes, and occupational dust exposure. In rare cases, genetic conditions such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency may also lead to COPD. Continued exposure increases lung damage over time.
